Winter training

For me personally this winter was good, I finished the season with some hill climbs, I had two great ones getting some age course records, podiums and strava top 10s wich I think is decent on hill climb courses, because I’m still young I don’t really follow a training plan as such but try to do 8-11 hours in the winter doing the majority of this on the weekends, investing in a power meter allowed me to pace these longer rides at around 180-200 watts for 3 hours and really smash the vo2 efforts midweek.

Around halfway through winter I felt I wasn’t progressing and so reduced my volume and increased my intensity, this worked well and was soon dishing out power pbs whilst feeling fresher, I think it’s important to stop once in a while and look at your progress to see how your doing a what tweaks you can make to your training, I know a lot of riders who have just slogged away and fallen out of love with the sport, something my club coaches and dad always remind me to be wary of.

I find zwift races around 15-30 minutes in length are a great way to add intensity and fun into your training, as well as KOM efforts, I love to have a reward after an effort so wether that be a good zwift result or a KOM/ top 10 on strava, it motivates me to push through and get the most out of myself in the effort.
